Hopewell Rock at high tide

We were able to arrive at Hopewell Rock in time to see the tide rise...and it does so quickly! 

Yesterday at low tide...we stood under the arch...on the ocean floor.



Today that same archway looked much different...
It was neat to see how quickly it actually came in. Had we planned more time at the park today we could've gone on a kayak tour. It looked like fun. Can you spot them?
Off to PEI. The Confederation Bridge is long! Can't imagine building that length of bridge! It connects New Brunswick to PEI. It is about 12.9 km long and is Canada's longest bridge and the world's longest bridge over ice covered waters. It truly is a marvel of engineering.
Driving towards Charlottetown  we passed many fields growing hay and potatoes. Much of the soil in this part of PEI is quite red...
So much more open land for farming here...New Brunswick was so densely forested that farming would be tough.

We wandered around town a bit and found a lovely restauant for supper...more seafood...right on the ocean.  We are trying our best to taste lots of local dishes and the seafood is awesome!

A good day of exploring

Beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures made for great walking around Charlottetown today. With the whole day to explore we found some great parks and trails. This city has remarkable green spaces and of course, the backdrop of the water makes everything sparkle. Don's eyes lit up as we rounded the corner and saw... hard to read in the photo ... ...ice cream! Cows is a PEI based ice cream company so of course we had to try it. It was yummy. We probably need to do more "research" as Don isn't sure it's quite as good as Dutchman Dairy...but after a few more cones he figures he will be in a better position to make that judgement. So many big old stately homes, old churches and colorful buildings. Even homes on water...and a whole tourist area with floating shops. Supper was outside along the water again. The haddock was delicious, the view wonderful. Everyone we have met, from shop owners, to restaurant servers, to locals passing by....they have all been so friendly...

Cycling day 1

We made it to our hotel! Jumped on our bikes at North Cape...the northern tip of the island. It's just over 2 hours drive by shuttle/van from where we stayed in Charlottetown.  Sun shone on us all day but the headwinds made for a good workout! We passed by many fields of potato crops. PEI  is a huge potato producer!  (We even drove by the Cavendish potato factory on our way in today , Mark. Thought of you....we could smell the fries!) Most of today's route was along secondary highways. The scenery was gorgeous...beautiful blue sparkly water, manicured homestead and even the ditches were beautiful as many were blooming with lupins and other wild flowers. Stopped for lunch along the way in a little town called Alberton. Super friendly people all stopping to say hello. Lunch at the local bakery was yummy! Back on the bikes for a couple more hours and then arrived in Mill River. The resort here is lovely...Dad was thrilled to see a pool and hot tub. Felt good on those tired o...

Happy Canada Day

Happy Canada Day from North Rustico...a village of about 850 people who must have bought out every Canada flag, banner and bunting from dollar stores for miles around.  This little village goes all out. They decorate homes, cars, and themselves Everyone goes to the parade. It was cute. So many kids took part in the parade, as did local services and business groups.  Floats, a celtic piping band, hockey teams....everyone was either in it or watching it. There were lots of candies being thrown out to spectators, water guns shooting water into the crowds and bubbles being blown. It was a big deal! Once the parade was over the festivities in the park began, with music, performances and food trucks. We continued with our ice cream research and found a local spot called Crickers. Double thumbs up from dad! A lovely relaxing day spent walking on the boardwalk ...and having a late lunch on the pier...more seafood.,,chowder, oysters and a seafood bake. All was delicious.
