Day 3

The temperature was perfect for cycling today. After an amazing breakfast at the bnb we headed off.



More potato fields...Don notices every one! Once a farm boy, always a farm boy...

Much of today's  cycling was on the Confederation Trail so there were no traffic concerns. 






Our morning coffee/hot chocolate break was in a little town called Kensington.  Nice little bakery just off the trail.



Then off to Emerald Junction.  




Once we arrived at Emerald Junction our tour guide, George, met us, loaded up our bikes and shuttled us off to Cavendish. While the scenery was gorgeous the traffic was heavier on this winding highway. It was also the hilliest part of our journey so we weren't too sad not to have to cycle it. 

We were dropped off at Cavendish Beach to continue our ride. So many amazing  beaches along the way on the shore of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence. 






We are now on our way to North Rustico... a little village of about 850 people. Stopped at a few more beaches along the way. None were crowded and all were beautiful. 








The mist started to roll in around us. Warm but humid.


Arrived in North Rustico. We have learned that when you ask locals for directions, plan for a lengthy chat! Everyone enjoys a visit here.

From the fancy Victorian bnb last night to a rustic cottage today...we are staying at some cool places.


But...dad feels quite at home... (fly swatters make him happy ???)

Dinner tonight was so fun....lobster!
Tomorrow is a non cycling rest day. This little town goes all out for Canada Day so it should be an interesting day of local charm.

A good day of exploring

Beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures made for great walking around Charlottetown today. With the whole day to explore we found some great parks and trails. This city has remarkable green spaces and of course, the backdrop of the water makes everything sparkle. Don's eyes lit up as we rounded the corner and saw... hard to read in the photo ... ...ice cream! Cows is a PEI based ice cream company so of course we had to try it. It was yummy. We probably need to do more "research" as Don isn't sure it's quite as good as Dutchman Dairy...but after a few more cones he figures he will be in a better position to make that judgement. So many big old stately homes, old churches and colorful buildings. Even homes on water...and a whole tourist area with floating shops. Supper was outside along the water again. The haddock was delicious, the view wonderful. Everyone we have met, from shop owners, to restaurant servers, to locals passing by....they have all been so friendly...

Cycling day 1

We made it to our hotel! Jumped on our bikes at North Cape...the northern tip of the island. It's just over 2 hours drive by shuttle/van from where we stayed in Charlottetown.  Sun shone on us all day but the headwinds made for a good workout! We passed by many fields of potato crops. PEI  is a huge potato producer!  (We even drove by the Cavendish potato factory on our way in today , Mark. Thought of you....we could smell the fries!) Most of today's route was along secondary highways. The scenery was gorgeous...beautiful blue sparkly water, manicured homestead and even the ditches were beautiful as many were blooming with lupins and other wild flowers. Stopped for lunch along the way in a little town called Alberton. Super friendly people all stopping to say hello. Lunch at the local bakery was yummy! Back on the bikes for a couple more hours and then arrived in Mill River. The resort here is lovely...Dad was thrilled to see a pool and hot tub. Felt good on those tired o...

St. Andrews

 Picking up a rental car this morning let us explore destinations farther afield. We drove about an hour west of St. John and found the cutest resort town called St. Andrews by the Sea.  Don always makes new friends... We wandered near the water and along the pier. In spite of the many ice cream shops Don showed tremendous willpower...no ice cream today. We did have a big bowl of the yummiest seafood chowder for lunch at a cute waterside restaurant. I think we are addicted to seafood chowder. We spent part of the afternoon wandering through the Kingsbrae Gardens...so beautiful. These Gardens are filled with all kinds of flowers and sculptures... There is even a section with farm animals like goats and bunnies. The kids must love these! Off we went to find the small community of Blacks Harbour and see an old lighthouse on Pee Point.
